Toronto Olympians Win and Lose
The Toronto Olympians opened their season with two victories, a 6-1 win over London City and a 4-0 shutout against the Shooters, but lost last years CPSL top goal scorer Eddy Berdusco with a dislocated shoulder.  Berdusco was taken to hospital in London and will be out of action for 4 to 6 weeks.

On Sunday the Olympians travelled to Richmond Green to play the Shooters who were undefeated in pre season play.  They looked lost in the first half without their top goal scorer and were lucky to come out of the 45 minutes with a 0-0 tie, in fact York Shooters could have been up 2-0.  Willy Guimarra rocketed a shot off the crossbar at the 30th minute mark and with 4 minutes to go, Olympians goalie Brian Bowes made a superb save on Paolo DeNicola.

In the second half, Shooters gave away a penalty at the 52 minute mark and Gus Kouzmanis made no mistake burying into the back of the net, two blatant errors by the Shooters allowed Kouzmanis and Matis to make the score 3-0.  Jonh Matis who was ejected at the 83rd mark scored the Olympians 4th goal on a nice solo effort.

Olympians will be without Berdusco and Matis for their next game which takes place Sunday, June 18th against League leaders Toronto Croatia at Birchmount Stadium, 8:00 p.m. kick-off.

Scoring in London for the Olympians were Danny Zianniis and Jonh Matis with two each, Eddy Berdusco and Gus Gouzmanis, scoring the lone City goal was Luan Jonuzzi.

Croatia Goes on Top
Toronto Croatia beat the North York Astros 5-1 scoring three goals in the last two minutes of play, Toronto Croatia opened strongly and could have gone up 1-0 at the 3 minute mark.  Buzali received a nice pass from Akmadzic only to see his volley sale over the bar from 5 yards out!!  Croatia opened the scoring at the 29th minute mark when Akmadzic made a perfect 40 yard pass to Leo Marasovic who used his great speed to break the Astros defence and placed a well directed shot into the bottom right hand corner.

Astros went down to ten men when Sam Medeiros was ejected at the 35th minute mark for his second cautionable offence.  Astros keeper Peter Libicz kept the score 1-0 at the half with two spectacular save on Croatia strikers Moore and Marasovic.

Croatia knowing they had a man advantage came out quickly, real quickly scoring at the 32 second mark, but the gutsy Astros would not give in and more than held their own, Astros got on the score board at the 64th minute silencing the Croatia fans, Alex Nardi send a well placed cross from a set play outside the penalty area which O'Neil Brown chested and volleyed into the net.

It was not until the last two minutes of play that Croatia broke the game open, with Leo Marasovic making two great runes down the left flank, then unselfishly crossed the ball two Paul Moore for him to tape the ball into the open net.

In other League action St. Catharines edged York Region Shooters 1-0 in a game that saw 7 yellow cards.  Frank Delpriore scored for St. Catharines with three minutes to go in the game, the victory moved the Roma Wolves into a third place tie with the Glen Shields Sun Devils.  St. Catharines' next away game is against the Sun Devils on June 18th. This game should be a dandy because we all know how much these two teams like each other.

Glen Shields 4, Oshawa Flames 2
The Flames travelled to the Dufferin District Stadium to challenge the Glen Shields Sun Devils.  Their traveling fans welcomed the Flames as they were escorted on to the field by a youth team.

The game began and the first half ended seeing Glen Shields as the sole dominator of the game.  Even after many efforts by Flames goal keeper Chris Walker and one amazing slide in save by Flames #18 Andy Methven, Glen Shields was able to lead the Flames players and skimmed the hands of Chris Walker.  Only seconds after #10 Marco Antonucci put a goal pass Walker too, followed by more scoring chances for Glen Shields and a second goal for #6 Mike Glasgow that was deflected off Flames player #5 Adam Klukowski.

Worried looks covered the faces of Flames fans as the second half began, but fortunately, they were in for a good surprise.  The Flames came out in the second turning on their heat and looking like a new squad.  The Flames put the boat to Glen Shields with many scoring opportunities.  Veteran player #17 David Kohek again held the team together up front creating great scoring chances and putting two in for the Flames.  Kohek's first goal was a head ball goal assisted by #10 Myles Devine.  For his second goal, Kohek skillfully played the ball and put it in the back of the net.

Flames Player #2 Steve Gill was an outstanding addition to the squad creating scoring chances and amazing plays.  Gill saw help when #11 Vagner Catilho subbed in hot as ever challenging any Glen Shields player he encountered.  It was a good second half for the Flames players old and new.  Youth player #14 Mathew Gennaro had a great first game and defense man #6 Anthony Whitney (last year's MVP) as always was solid in his game.

After battling over the ball Glen Shields player #8, Fitzroy Powell was able to put one more pass the Flames goalkeeper late in the second half.  The game would end at a 4-2 victory for the Glen Shields Sun Devils.  It was a game loss but a gain in experience for the young Flames that pulled themselves together to heat up the second half.  The battle may have been lost for the Flames, but the war is still ahead.

OSHAWA FLAMES next travel to Esther Shiner Stadium to meet North York Astros on June 11th at 7:30 p.m.

The next OSHAWA FLAMES home game takes place on Sunday, July 18th against the York Region Shooters, Civic Stadium, 7 p.m.
