Elvis Hits for Two
It did not take Elvis Thomas very long to get into the CPSL scoring mode.  Last night, Elvis scored both Olympians goals as they moved into sole possession of second place with a 2-1 win over St. Catharines Roma Wolves.

St. Catharines opened strongly and were unfortunate not to be up 2-0 in the first ten minutes.  Gary McGuchan had two excellent scoring opportunities only to see Brian Bowes turn both shots aside for corner kicks.

Thomas opened the scoring at the 30th minute.  On a nice three-way pass between Danny Ziannis and Arte Alkatov, Elvis broke through the Roma defence and slotted the ball home from just outside the penalty area.  His second goal came only four minutes later when once again great passing by Ziannis sprung Thomas free, Thomas outpaced the rushing Dino Perry and knocked the ball into an open net from 8 metres out.  Lucio Ianerio had a great opportunity to get one before the half as he broke in on the right flank only to see Bowes make a great save at point blank range.

The second half belonged to St. Catharines, they applied constant pressure.  Gary McGuchan had the Olympian defence in a state of disarray and his creative runs down the left wing caused constant problems.  McGuchan hit the post at the 67th minute and again at the 71st minute.  St. Catharines continued the pressure and scored at the 81st minute as Jerry Cipriani muscled his way into the penalty area and rocketed a shot that hit the top left hand corner.

St. Catharines almost equalized on an unusual play.  Gary Hughes let a shot go from about 30 metres out, it hit an Olympian defender, went over the head of Bowes and hit the crossbar!

Final score 2-1 Olympians.
