Lynx advance to semis in A-League
playoffs
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CP) -- The Toronto Lynx scored twice in
the first half then held
on to beat the Long Island Rough Riders 2-1 and
advance to the next round of the
playoffs in A-League soccer action Friday.
Midfielder Brian Ashton put Toronto ahead just five minutes into
the game, when he
fired the ball from 32 metres out into the top corner of
the net past Riders goalkeeper
Paul Grafer.
The Lynx added to
their lead in the 30th minute when Juan Arango knocked in a cross
from Lloyd
Barker.
The Toronto defence held on in the second half before
allowing a goal by Long Island
defender Dahr Mohammed in the 78th minute. The
Rough Riders continued to press
until the final whistle, but could not score
the equalizer.
The Lynx move on to the second round and will face
the winner of Saturday's match
between the Richmond Kickers and the Hampton
Roads Mariners.
The first game of the two-leg series is Friday in
Toronto.
