FOUR WINS IN A ROW FOR OLYMPIANS

In Wednesday night's action, Toronto Olympians made it four wins in a row to start the 1999 season. They also succeeded in doing something they failed to do last year - they won a game in St. Catharines! In last year's successful campaign, the only team they had trouble with was St. Catharines - being held to a tie twice in St. Catharines and losing to them in the Playoff Final.

On Wednesday they got a quick start with a goal from Elvis Thomas after only seven minutes. Elvis scored his second of the game at the 22nd. minute to put Olympians up 2 - 0. Olympians put the game out of reach in the second half with a goal in the 76th. minute by 17-year old Arte Alkhatov, a player brought up from the Olympians U-21 team who had come on a substitute. The three points for the 3 - 0 win moved Olympians into first place ahead of London City who have played two more games. However, London will have a chance to move back into first place when they entertain St. Catharines on Friday night.

In Wednesday's other game, Toronto Croatia won their second game of the season - a 2 - 1 win over York Region Shooters. The Shooters had taken a 1 - 0 lead in the first half with a goal in the 26th. minute from Willy Giumarra but Croatia equalised in the 40th. minute on a nice set play. A free kick just outside the penalty area was passed laterally to Czeslaw Zajac who fired the ball into the top left corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.

Both teams had chances in the second half but the game appeared to be headed for a draw until the final minute when Croatia's Tom Granic found himself clear in front of the goal and lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the net for the winning goal. The three points moved Croatia from bottom place to fourth place in the league standings.
