SHOOTERS STILL ALIVE

York Region Shooters kept their playoff hopes alive on Sunday night with a convincing 4 - 1 win over the North York Astros.

Paolo Denicola scored three goals in the first half for the Shooters. Alex Nardi scored the lone goal for the Astros before Damien Puranda made it a 4 - 1 final score for the Shooters. Next up for the Shooters are league leaders, Toronto Olympians, at Birchmount on Wednesday, September 8th.

In Sunday's other game, Oshawa Flames almost upset the Toronto Olympians at Birchmount. Leading 1 - 0 at half-time on a goal by John Lawrence, the Flames could smell victory and hand the Olympians their first loss of the season.

Whatever Olympians coach Davie Gee said to his team at half-time must have worked as they took the lead early in the second half. First, Elvis Thomas tied the score in the 49th. minute as he tapped in a rebound after a tremendous save by Flames keeper, Jay Chaney on an Eddy Berdusco shot. Gus Kouzmanis then gave Olympians the lead in the 60th. minute. The Olympians continued to press and could have gone ahead by a wider margin but for some excellent work by the Flames keeper.

Then with just 15 minutes remaining, Oshawa tied the score on a thunderous shot by Pat Dickenson from the edge of the penalty area. The tie for Oshawa against the formidable Toronto Olympians is a morale booster for the team heading into the second leg of their League Cup Semi-Final against Toronto Croatia on Wednesday night at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium - kick-off 7:00 p.m.
