Lynx Get Their Man
A-League's new team shores up the defence.

By Paul Hendren

After conceding seven goals in their first two games the Toronto Lynx identified the need to bolster their young line up with an experienced goalkeeper. After intense negotiations it was announced on Thursday afternoon that Toronto inked veteran goalkeeper Pat Onstad to a one year contract.

The 29 year old Onstad was languishing in a back up role with the Montreal Impact and it was doubtful whether he was going to displace the highly regarded Paulo Ceccarrelli as top dog in Montreal. Toronto acquired the giant 6' 2" goalkeeper for an undisclosed amount of cash and released 25 year old Ian Ritchie to make room on their roster.

Onstad brings an impressive resume to the Fledgling A-League team and he is considered as being Bob Lenarduzzi's third choice for the national team. While playing for the Toronto Blizzard in the CSL Onstad established a CSL record for shutouts (14) and he led the Winnipeg Fury to the 1992 CSL championship. This past winter he tended goal for the Edmonton Drillers of the NPSL.
