PORTUGAL FC DOWNS CROATIA 4-2....CSL announce changes to weekend schedule
2010-05-21

Portugal FC jumped to a 2-0 lead after 27 minutes to prevail by a 4-2 score over Toronto Croatia at Lamport Stadium Friday night, while for the second time in less than a week a game was postponed due to an unplayable surface at Centennial Stadium.

Portugal were aggressive early and scored after 12 minutes when Jamaal Smith headed past Croatia goalkeeper Sandi Matika, and a picture goal from 35 yards by midfielder Michael Luk increased the lead to 2-0 at the 27th minute mark.

Croatia's Tihomir Maletic reduced the Portugal lead to 2-1 after 34 minutes and Croatia were reduced to 10 men three minutes later when Hugo Herrera was shown the red card by referee Yusri Rudolf for violent conduct. It was 2-1 at the interval.

Nine minutes into the second half Maletic tied the game 2-2 for Toronto Croatia, but Adrian Pena struck for the home side to give Portugal a 3-2 lead at 65 minutes and Ramon Bailey secured the win 10 minutes later when he made it 4-2 off a rebound.

Portugal have four points from three games following a 1-0 loss to TFC Academy in the opener and 3-3 tie with Brantford Galaxy last Sunday prior to tonight's win, while Toronto Croatia will play their second game over the weekend, a changed venue to Lamport Stadium on Sunday, that's an 8.30 pm kickoff.

There are three changes to the CSL schedule over the weekend. TFC Academy have moved their kickoff time forward to 4 pm Saturday for the game with Brampton Lions at the BMO Field, the Montreal Impact Academy game with FC Hamilton Croatia at the Saputo Stadium at 7 pm has been relocated to Dollard des Ormeaux with the same kickoff time, and the Toronto Croatia vs. Brantford Galaxy game scheduled for Centennial Stadium at 8.15 pm on Sunday has been relocated to Lamport Stadium with an 8.30 pm kickoff.

This is the second postponement for the CSL at the Etobicoke ground in less than a week. The Toronto Croatia vs London City game set for Centennial Stadium last Sunday was called off due to a modification of the one year-old synthetic surface down the east touchline being unsafe for soccer.

Repairs by the city during the week and prior to the game failed to convince CSL match officials the repair was adequate.
