TWO GOALS BY ALLANDO MATHESON LIFTS TFC ACADEMY TO 2-2 TIE.....New faces join St. Catharines veterans in home opener
2010-06-09

TFC Academy forward Allando Matheson struck twice in the late stages to bring his team from a 2-0 deficit to tie St. Catharines Wolves 2-2 at Club Roma, St, Catharines, the only game in the CSL Wednesday night.

Matheson beat Wolves' keeper Claudio Perri from the penalty spot at 73 minutes, then scored 10 minutes later to earn a point that lifted the Academy side to third position in the CSL First Division standings.

Fielding a team of players from the past with several newcomers at the regular season home opener, St. Catharines took an early lead when forward Dana Heimbecker put the ball past TFC goalkeeper Garrett Cyprus and it was just four minutes later when midfielder Matthew Cain gave the home side a 2-0 lead, the score at half-time.

The second half turned into a chippy contest and it was a serious tripping incident at 72 minutes that led to the penalty. Referee Steve DePiero showed St. Catharines' Stefan Kamendy a red card for the foul and pointed to the spot. Matheson drove the ball into the net to cancel the arrears and the 2-2 tie held to the final whistle.

CSL resumes play on Friday night when London City host Serbian White Eagles at Cove Road, that's an 8.38 pm kickoff and new teams FC Hamilton Croatia clash with Brantford Galaxy at Timmis Stadium in Hamilton, a 9 pm start. There is one game in the CSL in Montreal on Saturday, that's at the Saputo Stadium at 1 pm and there are three games in southern Ontario on Sunday.
