2010-08-01

York Region Shooters are back on top with a 4-1 home victory over Brantford Galaxy, while in two other games played in the CSL Sunday, Tihomir Maletic scored all 4 goals in a 4-3 Toronto Croatia defeat of North York Astros and Brampton Lions blanked Portugal FC 2-0.

Brantford Galaxy took a 1-0 lead over the Shooters on a goal by Marsalis Beckford at the 22nd minute mark, but it took just two minutes for the home side to draw level when Jason De Thomasis found the bottom corner of the net from 6 yards, out of reach of Galaxy goalkeeper Ante Domjanovic.

Forward Kadian Lecky put York Region into a 2-1 lead at 66 minutes, then made it 3-1 10 minutes later. This was followed by a fourth York Region goal scored by Nick Cisternino who found the net at the 90th minute mark, a 4-1 final score.

York Region Shooters go on top of the CSL standings with an 8-3-3 WLT record for 27 points, two points in front of Milltown FC in second place.

Brantford Galaxy have a 5-4-3 record for 18 points.

Toronto Croatia had to come back from a 2-0 deficit to win their game over the Astros at Centennial Stadium. Erik Grigore scored first for the visitors at 27 minutes and forward Nick Miodrag made it 2-0 for the Astros 7 minutes later, a 2-0 score at half-time.

Croatia's Tihomir Maletic scored at 63 and 70 minutes to bring the teams level 2-2, then North York took a 3-2 lead on a goal by Camilo Morino at the 75th minute mark.

Maletic struck his third goal to equalize 3-3 at 85 minutes, then scored his fourth goal and the winner at 93 minutes when the Astros defenders appeared to give up the ball in a goalmouth scramble. Maletic found the net from close range for his eighth goal of the season, a 4-3 final score in favour of Toronto Croatia.

Toronto Croatia improved their position in the standings and are now at 3-2-5 for 14 points, while North York Astros remain at 14 points from a 4-8-2 record.

Brampton Lions also continue to improve their position in the standings and did so with an important 2-0 win over Portugal FC at Victoria Park in Brampton.

Blazej Skoczylas opened the scoring at 74 minutes, from a free kick from 22 yards that was awarded for a foul by Portugal goalkeeper Mike Silva on Brampton's Kevin Omokhua. Silva was also shown the red card for denying an opponent an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

It was Omokhua who scored the second goal for the home side, he made no mistake from the penalty spot at 91 minutes following a hand ball in the box, and the game ended 2-0 for Brampton.

Brampton Lions are at 4-8-2 for 14 points and Portugal FC have a 5-6-2 record for 17 points.

There is one mid-week game on Wednesday when St. Catharines Wolves host FC Hamilton Croatia at Club Roma in St. Catharines, an 8 pm start.
