2010-09-09

Portugal FC won their ninth game of the regular season with a 2-0 victory over St. Catharines Wolves at Club Roma in St. Catharines Wednesday night, the only game scheduled in the Canadian Soccer League.

Portugal midfielder Marko Bedenikovic struck the opener at the 38th minute mark, scoring from a free kick which stayed low to beat the St.Catharines wall and goalkeeper Claudio Perri for a 1-0 score at the interval.

St. Catharines had chances to draw level, including a missed penalty kick at the 57th minute mark, but eventually Portugal came back to score again at 75 minutes. It was Andrea Lombardo who found the net following a miscue in the Wolves' defence for a 2-0 lead for the visitors and the score at the final whistle.

A determined Portugal FC continue to improve in the standings with a 9-8-3 WLT record for 30 points which puts the Toronto west-end club tied for 4th position.

By contrast the woes of St. Catharines Wolves continue with 13 defeats in 17 games played, just 8 points earned which is well of the pace to virtually rule out any opportunity for a playoff berth.

The CSL picks up again with three games scheduled for Friday night, there is one game on Saturday in Montreal and a further three games on Sunday.
