MIRABELLI'S HAT-TRICK LEADS PORTUGAL FC TO 5-1 VICTORY, Galaxy in playoffs, Shooters, Serbian Eagles share top position in standings
2010-10-01

A natural first half hat-trick by Portugal FC striker Massimo Mirabelli, his second of the season, went almost unnoticed while important wins - and losses - stole the limelight in an end of season Friday night of frenzy as teams continued to battle for crucial points.

York Region Shooters won a big one at Brampton, a 2-0 defeat of the Lions at Victoria Park to put the York Region side at the top of the table and more importantly, with two games still to play, a distinct edge to keep that place when the regular season ends next weekend.

With Brampton needing points to clinch a playoff berth, the game was quick and entertaining, but it was the Shooters that did the scoring when midfielder Mario Orestano found the net at the 50th minute and forward Des Humphrey made it 2-0 seven minutes later.

The 2-0 final score improved the visitors to a 12-4-6 WLT record for 42 points and top position in the table. The two games remaining for the Shooters are against TFC Academy and Toronto Croatia. Brampton are at 7-10-6 for 27 points and the loss was a blow to their championship aspirations and their chance of clinching the last playoff berth. The Lions have one game still to play, against Toronto Croatia on Sunday.

Serbian White Eagles defeated arch rivals Toronto Croatia 2-0 and it was a spectacular effort that put the Eagles on the way to victory when at 49 minutes goalkeeper Milos Kocic aimed a clearance well up field to Kirie Dimitrov on the right wing. The midfielder crossed the ball to Milos Scepanovic who slotted the ball inside the right post for his 13th of the season.

Dimitrov struck the second goal for Serbian White Eagles at 85 minutes to secure the three points and put last year's championship finalist in second position in the standings, tied on points with York Region Shooters, each with 42. Serbian Eagles now have a 11-3-9 record with one game to play, against Brantford Galaxy on Sunday.

Toronto Croatia are at 7-7-7, they have 28 points with three games remaining, a position which gives the best opportunity to capture the eighth and last playoff berth.

Portugal FC were too much for London City at Lamport Stadium, coming away with a 5-1 well-deserved victory. Following Mirabelli's hat-trick at 4, 23 and 29 minutes for a 3-0 halftime score, the Toronto west-end team added goals by Marko Bedenicovic at 52 minutes and Joseph Del Priori at 68 minutes. London's Thomas Beattie struck for his side at 68 minutes.

Portugal FC has completed its regular season with an 11-8-5 record for 38 points and has secured a playoff berth. London City has a 3-12-8 record for 17 points and sits in 12th position.

There is one game in the CSL Saturday when FC Hamilton Croatia trip to North York for a game with the Astros at Esther Shiner Stadium, there are four games on Sunday and a game on Tuesday.
