2010-10-03

York Region Shooters defeated TFC Academy 1-0 Sunday, while a penalty kick goal at 93 minutes gave Toronto Croatia a 2-2 tie with Brampton Lions and berth in the playoffs. Serbian White Eagles defeated Brantford Galaxy 3-2 and Milltown swept by St. Catharines Wolves 4-0.

The lone York Region Shooters goal against TFC Academy was scored by Alex Trujillo at 21 minutes for a season record of 13-4-6 for 45 points and left the Shooters with one game remaining, a clash on October 8 with Toronto Croatia. TFC Academy completed their regular season with a 10-6-8 record for 38 points

York Region Shooters and Serbian White Eagles are tied at the top, each team with 45 points, but the most wins column of 13 wins is in favour of the Shooters who share the opportunity for a league title win with Milltown FC.

Following a well played scoreless first half, Serbian White Eagles took a 1-0 lead against Brantford Galaxy at Lions Park when Milos Scepanovic headed into the net at the 53rd minute mark and Mirko Medic made it 2-0 10 minutes later.

Galaxy forward Miodrag Andvelkovic scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 at 75 minutes but that was followed by a goal at 85 minutes when Serbian Eagles' Stefan Vukovic struck to make it 3-1 for the visitors.

Andvelkovic reduced the lead for Brantford for a 3-2 final score to complete the regular season for Serbian Eagles (12-3-9 for 45 points), leaving Brantford (9-9-5 for 32 points) with one game to play against St. Catharines Wolves on October 8.

Toronto Croatia and Brampton Lions came together at Centennial Stadium both looking to capture the final playoff spot. Brampton took the lead at 12 minutes on a goal by Kevin Omokhua for a 1-0 score at halftime.

Brampton increased the lead to 2-0 at 65 minutes on a spectacular free kick by Daniel Nascimento who struck the ball from 25 yards just inside the left post.

Brampton's playoff hopes were dashed late in the game when Toronto Croatia were awarded two penalty kicks, the first at 69 minutes, then again at 93 minutes. Referee Gianni Facchini pointed to the spot for hand ball on both occasions and both scored by Toronto Croatia striker Tihomir Maletic.

The game ended 2-2 and the result gave Toronto Croatia (7-7-8 for 29 points) the last of eight playoff berths. The eight teams will make up the quarterfinals for a home and away two-game series leading to a one-game semifinal and a one-game CSL Championship Final at the end of October. Brampton Lions completed their season with a strong showing in the second half of the campaign to end with a 7-10-7 record for 28 points.

Milltown FC scored four unanswered goals beginning with a strike at 16 minutes by Martijn Kuijpers, Thierry Mangwa-Batomen made it 2-0 three minutes later, Martin Artale increased the lead to 3-0 at 26 minutes and Cordell Benjamin completed the scoring late in the second half.

A win by Milltown FC (12-4-7 for 43 points) in their last regular league game against FC Hamilton Croatia on October 5, together with a last regular season game loss by York Region Shooters would give the Milton-based Milltown the league title.

BRAMPTON RESERVES TRIUMPH

Brampton Lions Reserves, known as Brampton Dixie Lions following their affiliation with the Dixie Soccer Club, captured the CSL Reserve Division Saturday, a day that marked the end of the regular season schedule.

Brampton Reserves defeated Milltown FC in the final game for a 11-3-1 season record for 34 points, including an impressive six-game winning streak to finish the season.

The finish was remarkable considering the loss of nine players to their U.S. colleges in August. Michael DiMatteo, head coach of Brampton Lions Reserves was elated at the outcome.

"We had good depth this year and were able to have players step in at the end of the season. I'm really proud of them and all of our players who contributed to this. We look forward to the playoffs and we'll be giving it everything to win the Reserve Division championship," he said.

The CSL Reserve Division playoffs will get underway at the Joan of Arc ground in Maple on Saturday, October 9 with four quarterfinal games - the top eight teams in the final standings. They are Brampton Lions Reserves, TFC Academy II, Brantford Galaxy Reserves, York Region Shooters Reserves, Milltown FC Reserves, Portugal FC Reserves, Serbian White Eagles Reserves and FC Hamilton Croatia Reserves.

Games will kickoff at 3 pm, 5 pm, 7 pm, 9 pm.
