TFC capitalize on Sounders errors in 2-0 win

TORONTO -- Dwayne De Rosario and O'Brian White capitalized on two second-half miscues by the Seattle Sounders to lead Toronto FC to a 2-0 win on Sunday.

De Rosario continued to be Toronto's offensive centerpiece, scoring his fifth goal to break a scoreless draw and then setting up White's strike for the first goal by a TFC player not named De Rosario in 2010.

The first goal capped off a bizarre sequence of plays for the offensively challenged Canadian club. Toronto striker Chad Barrett tried to reach De Rosario on a cross, but the ball hit referee Jorge Gonzalez. Seattle midfielder Osvaldo Alonso then picked up the rebound, but lost the ball at the edge of his own 18-yard box. The Toronto captain then scooped up the loose ball and fired a blast into the top right corner of the goal in the 58th minute.

Seattle, which missed a golden opportunity in the first half through Brad Evans, continued to apply the pressure, but Toronto took advantage of a Tyrone Marshall error to get the insurance marker in the 76th minute. TFC took full advantage, with White receiving from De Rosario around the penalty marker and one-timing a shot by a helpless Kasey Keller.

TFC goalkeeper Stefan Frei made several key saves in the second half to secure his first shutout of the season to the delight of the 18,394 rain-drenched fans at BMO Field.

The win avenges Toronto's home loss to the expansion side last season and improves to the Reds to 2-3-0 while dropping Seattle to 2-2-2.

The win was timely for the home side considering Toronto's upcoming stretch of three games in seven days that will see it play the Montreal Impact in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship opener and defending MLS champs Real Salt Lake in Utah on May 1.

Seattle came into Sunday's game having drawn FC Dallas just three days earlier and Sounders manager Sigi Schmid rested two of his most dangerous attacking players, Steve Zakuani and Fredy Montero, who both entered in the second half.

Sounders Designated Player Freddie Ljunberg, who came off the bench in Frisco on Thursday, started the match at BMO Field.

Weather conditions were a factor throughout the game as an ongoing Seattle-like drizzle made it tough for players to keep their footing. Despite the rain and trampling, the much-heralded grass at BMO Field held up well and should be ready for Wednesday.
