"Unbelievable!"...
by DJT
...to quote Guillermo Compton Hall from last week.
June 16,
Mississauga 9 North York 0. My, how things have changed! Of course the whole
North York turnaround got started with the first surprise win over
Mississauga in September; since then they've lost only 1 of 7. And that loss was
the 6-1 thrashing by... Toronto Croatia! Is there a trend developing? Vengeance
on the thrashers!
North York completely dominated this game and could easily have
had 2 or 3 more, while I don't think Mississauga had even 3 good chances.
Compton Hall sure makes a huge difference, but all the Astros played well,
defensively and offensively, especially as a unit, which I've noticed recently.
The second goal was nice and the third goal was a bullet by Salguero just under
the bar. But some of the best offensive plays didn't even end up in the
net.
Mississauga had 3 Lynx players on the field (Di Placido, Ashton,
Faria), plus former A-leaguer Tilley, but they certainly didn't stand out.
Serioux didn't show up? That's pretty bad, since he was even announced in the
starting lineup... unless he had some type of emergency or something. But from
what I recall from previous reports, some of these Lynx recruits have been
unreliable since they arrived (didn't someone leave altogether?), which is very
unfair to those players who were benched or let go because of their arrival. I
don't think that these kinds of recruits are the way to go, at least not so many
of them.
In any case, I really enjoyed this win, considering all the
tough times. In all honesty I didn't expect it. Up 1-0 at the half I thought
Mississauga would come out strong, but that didn't happen. Even at 2-0 with
half-an-hour to go I wasn't believing it. After the third goal I finally
accepted that it was over, but in retrospect it was over way before
that.
At the beginning of the season I remember reading posts by some
non-regulars about how dumb it was to have North York, such a crappy team, host
the Playoff Cup. Well, the Astros have really proven something over the last few
games, especially in this one, no matter what happens now.
P.S. One final
comment concerning the field: it held up extremely well despite the rain. The
dirt patches have enlargened since the football season has started, but they
didn't turn to mud, and there weren't any noticeable puddles.
FORZA NORTH
YORK !!!
