Flames return to action at Civic Stadium...finally

After almost a month away, soccer squad returns for key game Saturday

OSHAWA - After nearly a month away from home, the Durham Flames return to play at Civic Stadium on Saturday.

And it's a big game for the Canadian Professional Soccer League club.

Needing to pass two teams in the Eastern Conference in order to make the playoffs, the Flames (5-6-2) will almost certainly need a win to keep those hopes alive when they face the Vaughan Sun Devils (3-7-2) Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Flames have 17 points in 13 games this season and currently sit in fifth place in the conference, one point back of the York Region Shooters, four back of both the Montreal Dynamites and the Metro Lions, and 20 back of the first-place Ottawa Wizards.

The top three teams qualify for playoffs.

The Flames have a big home-and-home set next weekend with the Shooters, in York Sept. 13 and in Oshawa Sept. 14 at 6 p.m.

In their most recent league action, the Flames fell 5-2 in Toronto to Supra Aug. 29 and beat the Wolves 1-0 in St. Catharines Aug. 21.

In Cup play, the Flames were eliminated in the quarterfinals after a loss and a tie with the Brampton Hitmen.
