NEW STRIKER MARCINA LEADS OTTAWA WITH THREE GOALS IN 4-2 WIN OVER ST. CATHARINES
Alen Marcina, a recent signing by Ottawa Wizards, led his team with three goals to a 4-2 win over St. Catharines Roma Wolves in CPSL action at Club Roma in St. Catharines on Sunday afternoon. Marcina, 24, an NSCAA All American born in Surrey, British Columbia, was outstanding with impressive strikes at the 11th 52nd and 58 minutes.
Toronto Supra also picked up its first win of the 2003 season on Sunday, defeating North York Astros, 1-0, on a penalty taken by Supra’s Mike De Luca.
Hamilton Thunder picked up its first win, a decisive 4-1 thumping of Durham Flames at Civic Stadium on Saturday, and there were three ties with Vaughan Sun Devils and Metro Lions playing to a scoreless tie, London City and Mississauga Olympians deadlocked at 1-1, both games on Friday, and Brampton Hitmen also tied 1-1 with Ottawa Wizards at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Wizards, defending CPSL champions, took the lead right after the kickoff in Sunday afternoon’s encounter with Roma Wolves when St. Catharines’Tony Carbonara helped a shot by Ottawa’s Abraham Osman into the St. Catharines net. The goal was credited to Osman at just 11 seconds.
Marcina made it 2-0 after 11 minutes and two minutes later Carlo Arghitto scored for St. Catharines to make it 2-1. Marcina’s second and third goals made it 4-1 for the Wizards and at the 65th minute Wolves’ Mark Mulholland reduced Ottawa’s lead to 4-2.
A goal by London City’s Andrew Logue at the 32nd minute mark of a hard-fought contest appeared to give the City its first win of the new season until Johnny Matas found the net with just seconds remaining in the game with Mississauga Olympians. The tie was a heartbreaker for the young London City squad playing a team of veterans and a visiting team favoured to win its opening game of the season.
The scoreless tie at Dufferin Clark involving a Sun Devils team that was the final product of a merger with last year’s York Region Shooters, was played before a well-attended crowd in fine opening night weather.
Kevin Nelson was credited with the lone Ottawa Wizards'goal in the 1-1 tie with Brampton when Maximiliaro Andrada, the Hitmen midfielder, appeared to put the ball into his own net on a deflection. Marcin Wysocki scored for Brampton at the 86th minute mark to salvage the tie.
Ian Bennett (14 minutes),Dave Simpson (20 minutes), and Gaston Bizera (75 minutes) and a penalty by Ryan Thomson at the 87th minute were the Hamilton Thunder scorers in the 4-1 decision over the Flames, with David Mills (70 minutes) scoring the lone marker for the home side.
