Soccer season starts sadly

Both Mississauga teams are off to disappointing starts in this Canadian Professional Soccer League season.

But, while Toronto Croatia president John Muhar said his team's weekend struggles was nothing to cry about, Mississauga Olympians owner David Gee says he is anxious for his team to play better.

Croatia opened Saturday with a 2-0 loss in Ottawa to last year's CPSL champions, the Wizards.

"I was happy with the effort we gave," Muhar said. "Our defence and goalie played well considering we were holding off a very potent offence."

The following day, Croatia was blanked again 3-0 to the Laval Dynamites in Montreal. Muhar hopes some soon-to-be added midfielders will help the team's transition game.

Croatia's home opener is Friday at Streetsville Memorial Park against Hamilton Thunder beginning at 8 p.m.

Thanks to an inept offence, the nomad Olympians are also looking for their first win. They followed a 2-0 loss to Toronto Supra at Etobicoke Centennial Park with a 1-1 tie in London.

Gee said his team has had its chances but has been unable to finish.

Just like Muhar, Gee hopes help is on the way -- either in the form of one-time Olympians' striker Kevin De Serpa, who needs an international release from a club in Europe, or via free agency.

Olympians play next Monday at North York's Esther Shiner Stadium against the Astros.
