OPEN CANADA CUP LOOMS LARGE

Despite having fun in the Canada Cup last season, Vaughan Sun Devils did not fare well in league or cup competition. It's a new ball game this season, however, as the team that resulted from merger is playing with a purpose, doing well in the league and are confident of its Open Canada Cup chances. Sun Devils meet Metro Lions in the Open Canada Cup third round on Saturday, August 2.

Vaughan Sun Devils will host three Open Canada Cup third round games during the Civic Holiday weekend, August 1 to 4, the Canadian Professional Soccer League has announced.

The games will be played at the Dufferin Clark ground in Vaughan.

There will also be one game at the OZ Stadium, home of the Ottawa Wizards and the fifth game will be played at Cove Road, home of London City.

These five games involving the ten surviving teams are on the last leg but one in the CPSL’s inaugural Open Canada Cup competition, which for the first time invites other teams from Ontario and Quebec to join the CPSL pros in a bid for the trophy and the $10,000 winner-take-all prize.

This cash prize is looming large with less than two months to the final game on Labour Day, Monday, September 1, and many are predicting that despite the strength of the pro teams, Kanata and AEK of London are capable of an upset and either one could take it all.

Ottawa Wizards must be considered the favourites following their triple crown victories of 2002, but some consider a much-improved Vaughan Sun Devils and Toronto Supra have big opportunities to scoop up the cash following their early season performances.

Others still in the hunt are London City, also an improved team this year, St. Catharines Roma Wolves, Laval Dynamites, Metro Lions and Durham Flames.

But to get to the final weekend, they must get through the upcoming third round which was drawn recently with the following venues:

Fri., Aug. 1 Cove Rd. 8.30 p.m. London City vs. St. Catharines Roma Wolves

Sat., Aug. 2 Dufferin Clark 3.30 p.m. Kanata vs. Toronto Supra

Sat., Aug. 2 Dufferin Clark 6.00 p.m. Metro Lions vs. Vaughan Sun Devils
