HOMETOWN HEROES RETURN TO TORONTO!

May 6, 2003 (TORONTO, ON) — In one of the earliest spring starts in Toronto, this Saturday, May 10th at 4:00 the Toronto Lynx open their 2003 home schedule at Centennial Park Stadium to take on their divisional rival, the Montreal Impact. The Lynx opened their year in mid-season form last Saturday in Pittsburgh, rolling over the previously undefeated Riverhounds, 2-0. Team captain Theo Zagar was sensational in net stopping 6 shots en route to the 24th shutout of his A-League career. The game also marked the Lynx debut of Haitian International and former MLS player, Josue Mayard. Mayard, who made his A-League debut with Montreal in 2000, would like nothing better than to take three points from his old club. Montreal opened the 2003 season with a hard fought 1-0 loss at Charleston. However, the perennial A-League title contender returns many of the players responsible for their sustained success. Team captain, Mauro Biello, has been with the Impact since their inaugural season and led the team in assists in 2002. In addition, Eduardo Sebrango, who had 18 goals in 2002, will test a strong Lynx defense. The Impact will also feature former Rochester Raging Rhinos and perennial Canadian National Team member, Martin Nash, who signed with Montreal this year. The game promises to be a gritty, hard fought affair, as the Lynx and Impact lock it up with important intra-divisional points on the line.

Opening ceremonies for the opener will begin at 3:30 with musical entertainment at which time the Toronto Lynx will also present the Pro Prospect Award which will be awarded to Under-20 Canadian National Team midfielder, Nick Blicharski. The award follows a program established by the Lynx last summer which encouraged all Ontario Colleges and Universities in Ontario to submit nominations for this award. The nominees were invited to camp allowing Lynx head coach a closer evaluation. Pinizzotto selected Blicharski, a Kitchener native and a midfielder from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, not only as the recipient of the award but also for the 2003 roster. Nick is a former member to the Hertha Berlin youth team in Germany and has also competed with the Under-17 Canadian National Team.
