Match Summary: The Toronto Lynx shocked the Virginia Beach Mariners, 1-0 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex to break their 4-game winless streak and hand the Mariners their first home defeat of the season. The Lynx began their 3-game road trip through the Southern United States in style, with their second road shutout win of the season, despite playing without starting goalkeeper, Theo Zagar, who was forced to sit out the match due to suspension. Backup, James Kryger, came up big in his first action of the 2003 season making 2 stops for the victory including a breakaway from Mariners' striker Gary Brooks to perserve the win with time winding down. The Lynx took the lead for good in the 34th minute when midfielder Joe Mattacchione's free kick took a deflection and beat Mariners 'keeper Joe Larson. That was all the scoring the Lynx would need as they shutdown the leagues highest scoring offense to improve to 2-3-1 on the season. The loss drops the Mariners to 4-2-1. Lynx head coach Peter Pinizzotto called it "a great win", as his team played with tremendous determination and spirit throughout the contest. Despite having scored 15 goals in only 6 games this season and featuring the A-League leader in goals, Dante Washington and assists, Roland Vargas-Aguilera, the Mariners were unable to crack the solid Lynx defense, lead by Lynx newcomer Josue Mayard who played his best game of the season. Pinizzotto hopes that this win will raise the spirits of his team and build some momentum as they continue their road trip to face the Charlotte Eagles on Thursday, May 29th at 7:30 PM and the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday, May 31 at 6:00 PM.
