SILVERBACKS DEFEAT TORONTO

Saturday, May 31 2003

The Atlanta Silverbacks grabbed their first win of the 2003 season lead by two goals from Velko Iotov and a goal and an assist from John Barry Nusum.

Atlanta will be pleased by this result but not all the questions were answered by tonight's performance and there will still be some concerns as they prepare for next weeks trip to Virginia Beach and Richmond.

Defensive mistakes prove costly in any league and the A-League is no different. Toronto jumped out to a 1-0 lead on one of these mistakes but tonight Atlanta found its' offense and was able to recover. John Barry Nusum, who looked to have equalised earlier in the game but was called for a foul on the keeper, received the ball after a scramble in the Toronto penalty area, he looked to have lost his opportunity as the ball proved difficult to control but he slid a pass across to Velko Iotov who made a difficult chance look easy to tie the score at 1-1.

In the second half Atlanta pushed forward in numbers and Nusum went from provider to goalscorer when he raced onto an Erik Ozimek through ball and blasted his shot past Theo Zagar in the Toronto net for a 2-1 Atlanta lead. Atlanta made it 3-1 when Jordy Broder was brought down in the Toronto penalty area. The referee pointed to the spot and Carlos Parra stepped up and calmly put Atlanta ahead 3-1. The goals did not stop there, some fine work by Mac Cozier down the left side produced a cross that Iotov cleverly turned into the net for his second goal of the night and a 4-1 Silverbacks lead.

Toronto picked up a consolation goal late but it was not enough to stop Atlanta from picking up it's first win of the season by a final score of 4-2.
