HYLTON SCORES IN 90TH MINUTE TO GIVE CHARLOTTE THE 1-1 TIE (Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles (0-5-3, 3pts) hosted the Toronto Lynx (2-3-1, 7pts) tonight at E.E. Waddell High School. For the fourth time in five games the Charlotte Eagles came out of the match with a tie, ending with a score of 1-1.
Charlotte and Toronto came out in a fairly even battle in the first half. The half consisted of quite a bit of midfield play with few real good scoring chances. Toronto led the shots with 10 to Charlotte's 4. Charlotte goalkeeper Dwayne Adams was forced to make four saves and Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar had 0 saves in the first half. Charlotte had two close scoring chances with a lunging header from Jose Gomez that went just wide of the net. In the 16th minute Andy McDermott took a free kick after the caution to Mauric Vincello for a trip. McDermott sent a bending shot around the the Toronto wall, but the shot went just wide right.
Toronto came out charged in the second half of the match. In the 46th minute of play Toronto midfielder Joe Mattacchione made a pass to midfielder Brian Ashton at the top corner of the 18 yard box. Mattachione blasted a hard low shot to the far post to beat Charlotte goalkeeper Dwayne Adams for the first goal of the match. Charlotte finally answered before the whistle in the 90th minute. Eagles midfielder Andy Guastaferro drove down the right flank and fed Andy Hylton about 12 yards out. Hylton shot a one-timer hard and low to the far post to beat Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar.
Eagles Coach Mark Steffens had this to say of tonight's game:
"I'm happy sneaking out a point tonight in the final minutes. We've been on the other side of that a lot this season. Nine games without a win has been a tough stretch, but we're taking it one game at a time. The guys are working and we've tied the last four out of five games."
After tonights match the Charlotte Eagles return to action on Saturday, May 31st for a home doubleheader evening with the Lady Eagles at E.E. Waddell High School. The Lady Eagles will try to keep their undefeated record alive as they take on the Northern Virginia Majestics at 5:30 pm. Following the Lady Eagles match, the Eagles A-League pro team will take on the Virginia Beach Mariners at 7:30 pm.
