ST. CATHARINES TRIUMPH 3-2 OVER HAMILTON THUNDER IN HOME OPENER
St. Catharines Wolves celebrated their home opener at Club Roma with a 3-2 win over last year’s Western Conference winners Hamilton Thunder in the only game scheduled in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Wednesday.
It was an important game for St. Catharines to win--before a home crowd in the first game of the new season, and also because the Garden City team lost the corresponding game by a 1-0 score last season and Hamilton completed the double with a humiliating 6-0 defeat of St. Catharines at Brian Timmis Stadium.
Joe Carbonara opened the scoring after 27 minutes for St. Catharines but the lead was short-lived when just four minutes later Cliff Riga tied the game for Hamilton.
Geoff Attard put St. Catharines 2-1 ahead at the 39th minute mark, but again Cliff Riga equalized for Thunder, a 2-2 tie at 54 minutes.
Carlo Arghittu struck the winner for Roma Wolves at the 81st minute mark and the 3-2 score held up despite late pressure from Hamilton.
Arghittu put everyone on notice in scoring the winner that he is bidding yet again for goalscoring honours following a magnificent tally of 18 goals last season in winning the CPSL scoring title.
It was the first win of the season for St. Catharines following a loss and a tie, while Hamilton Thunder have yet to win, with a 0-1-1 WLT record in the two games played to date.
