METRO LIONS HELD IN CHECK BY LOWLY ST. CATHARINES WOLVES 2-2
Western Conference leaders Metro Lions were held in check by foot-of-the-table St. Catharines Wolves in a 2-2 final score at Birchmount Stadium on Sunday night, and to the west of Toronto, Brampton Hitmen and Vaughan Shooters also played to a 2-2 tie, the only games in the Canadian Professional Soccer League that night.
In Saturday night's only game in the CPSL, a goal from the penalty spot after 21 minutes by Hamilton midfielder Edmilson De Carvalho looked like the winner in a well played encounter with Border Stars at Windsor Stadium, but with just two minutes to the final whistle former Oakland University forward Chris King struck an equalizer for the Windsor-based team to produce a 1-1 final score.
On Friday night, Toronto Supra remained the only unbeaten CPSL team in league play following a scoreless tie with London City in a game that could have gone either way at Cove Road in London.
In one other game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Friday, Toronto Croatia was impressive in its game with the struggling Durham Storm and registered a 4-0 victory over the team from Durham Region at Memorial Park in the Streetsville community of Mississauga.
It was a tough, fast-paced encounter at Birchmount Stadium on Sunday and started with a St. Catharines'opening goal by Frank Zumpano at 28 minutes, but Metro Lions tied the game on a strike by midfielder Billy Ninopoulos at the 33rd minute mark. Carlo Arghittu gave St. Catharines a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick almost on half-time and at 62 minutes Maxim Dornewal made it 2-2 for Metro Lions.
Metro Lions remain at the top of the Western Conference standings with a 7-1-3 WLT record for 24 points, five ahead of Toronto Supra, while St. Catharines are still at the foot of the standings with a 1-5-4 record for seven points.
Brampton Hitmen played their game Sunday at the tail-end of their well-attended Caribbean festival and the visitors were treated to excellent action in a game that looked like it was going Vaughan's way, but Brampton came back and the game ended a 2-2 tie.
Tony Marshall scored for Vaughan after just 10 minutes and Shooters' midfielder Andrea Rollins made it 2-0 after 31 minutes.
Former Toronto Supra player Martin Peraza now with Brampton was red-carded in the first half, but the set-back did not prevent a second-half comeback in which Brampton's Paul Doccorbert scoring after 57 minutes and captain Phil Ionadi making it 2-2 at the 33rd minute mark.
The Hitmen improve to a 4-3-3 WLT record for 15 points, five behind Border Stars in the WEstern Conference, while Vaughan Shooters stand at 5-2-3 for 18 points, one behind second-place Toronto Supra in the east.
While the Border Stars tied the game with a late equalizer on Saturday night, the result could have been much different had their Tati Errelade capitalized on being awarded a penalty kick at 19 minutes following a hand ball. The goalscoring midfielder failed to beat Thunder goalkeeper Roberto Ferrari from the spot.
Border Stars improve their position at the top of Western Conference standings with a 6-2-2 WLT record for 20 points, while Hamilton Thunder now have a 3-3-3 record for 12 points and third in the standings.
There were several opportunities for a victory in the game at London on Friday night despite the strong defensive play by both teams, but none more than the close call on the Supra goal at the 90th minute when London midfielder Erin Tafaj missed an ideal opportunity to snatch the win after being set-up by forward Paul Munster.
Toronto Supra now has a 5-0-4 WLT record for 19 points in second spot in the Eastern Conference, trailing league-leading Metro Lions by five points.
London City improve to 3-3-2 for 11 points, tied with Toronto Croatia in the Western Conference.
Edin Kalic opened the scoring for Toronto Croatia at the 9th minute mark in the win over Durham Storm, Wojceich Cwik made it 2-0 at 36 minutes, and two goals near the end of the game by Peyman Charkhzarin at 83 minutes and Zujezdan Kresic at 87 minutes made it 4-0.
Toronto Croatia are now at 3-5-2 for their 11 points while Durham Storm continue to labour at the foot of the Eastern Conference without a point.
