Match Summary: The Toronto Lynx made their first of two Western Canadian swings tonight to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps at Swangard Stadium. The Lynx got a boost from the opening kickoff with the return of midfielder, Shawn Faria, who got the start, seeing his first action since the season opener. The first half saw neither team able to generate much offense as they felt each other out in their first meeting of the season. The second half more than made up for the pace of the first as the offense opened up and the teams traded scoring opportunities. Vancouver got on the board first in the 62nd minute when midfielder John Sulentic picked up the ball on the left side before cutting towards the middle and unleashing a laser from 14 yards that beat Lynx 'keeper, Bryheem Hancock, to the far post. In a tough road battle, the Lynx were able to find an equalizer in the 75th minute when the ball fell to striker, Charles Gbeke off a scramble in front of the Vancouver goal. Gbeke volleyed home the first goal of his A-League career against his former team. With the game entering its final moments, Vancouver gave a final push forward which saw Sulentic break into the Lynx penalty area. His flick struck the arm of defender, Andres Arango, resulting in a Whitecaps penalty. Midfielder, Oliver Heald, converted from the spot giving the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead in the 90th minute. With the Lynx throwing everyone forward in an attempt to equalize, Sulentic lead a Vancouver counter attack passing to Alfredo Valente, receiving the return pass and sliding the ball past a sprawling Hancock, making the final score 3-1 in favour of Vancouver. The Lynx (4-8-1) will continue their 3-game road trip next Friday, July 2 in Syracuse, before returning home to face the defending A-League Champion, Charleston Battery on Thursday, July 8th at 7:30pm at Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke.
