Match Summary: Behind 2 goals from leading goal scorer, Ali Gerba, the Toronto Lynx began their Western Canadian road trip winning the back end of a home and home series with the Calgary Mustangs. In the scorching heat, the Lynx opened the scoring in a wild first half when, Rumba Munthali dispossessed the Mustangs in midfield and slid a diagonal ball into Gerba who scored his first of the night from close range. The lead would not hold as a defensive miscue allowed a long diagonal ball to fall to Conrad Smith on the far post who equalized for the Mustangs. Gerba put the Lynx in front again showing great composure in slipping a low shot into the bottom right corner in the 22nd minute, but the Mustangs would again tie it up before end of the half when Geert Brusselers banged in the equalizer off a corner kick. The first half action didn't stop with goal scoring, as Lynx captain, Shawn Faria and Mustangs', Steffen Holdt, were sent off early following a brief scuffle. With the Lynx making three substitutions at the half, the fresh legs worked to their advantage when midfielder, Edgar Bartolomeu cut the ball back to substitute striker, Charles Gbeke, who buried the game winner into the top of the net. With a one goal lead on the road, the Lynx went to a more defensive system and were able to smother the Calgary offense. Newcomer, Chris Handsor, signed from Edmonton late last week, made his Lynx debut as a substitute and provided solid play in the defensive midfield. With Faria sent off early and midfielder, Adrian Serioux, not making the trip to Alberta, the Lynx came up with one of their best team efforts of the season, improving their record to 7-10-1. The Lynx players will continue their road trip through Alberta tomorrow night when they take on Edmonton FC before returning to Toronto to take on the Virginia Beach Mariners on Monday, August 2nd at 6:00pm.
