ASTROS, SHOOTERS SCORE SHUTOUT WINS FRIDAY
HAMILTON THUNDER, CROATIA PLAY TO SCORELESS TIE
Saturday - July 16, 2005

North York Astros and Vaughan Shooters both came up with convincing shutout wins, while Hamilton Thunder remained unbeaten with a hard-fought scoreless tie with Toronto Croatia in games played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Friday.

The Astros have struggled to this juncture of the season and were going into the game at Cove Road in London with just one win in six starts, but the Toronto team looked confident and it was new signing Alex Braletic who led the way with two goals at 30 minutes and from the penalty spot at 74 minutes before Peter Zorbas sealed the win at the 78th minute for the Astros. London’s Marco Peeters was dealt a professional foul red card on the penalty goal for handling the ball deliberately.

Vaughan Shooters had an easy time at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa, with Stalin Cardenas opening the scoring at the 15 minute mark, followed by a strike by Jason De Thomasis at 40 minutes for a 2-0 half time score. Darryl Gomez made it 3-0 at 52 minutes, Sean Myers scored his first of two at 63 minutes, Cameron Medwin made the score 5-0 at 79 minutes and Myers rounded out the scoring for a 6-0 result at the 89th minute mark.

Hamilton Thunder and Toronto Croatia gave the Memorial Park fans an exciting spectacle despite the scoreless tie and the result means the Thunder have now played seven league games and conceded just one goal. Hamilton are now at 4-0-3 WLT for 15 points, tied for second spot in the west with London City.

Toronto Croatia are on top in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1-2 record for 14 points.

Vaughan Shooters picked up their third win of the season and stand at 3-2-3 for 12 points, while North York Astros improve to 2-5-0 for 6 points as a result of their win.

In the Women’s Canada Cup competition, Durham Region All-Stars overpowered York Region Lady Shooters, 5-1.
