SHOOTERS GO ON TOP AS HAMILTON COLLAPSE 5-1
Sunday - July 17, 2005

Two weekend wins, three wins in succession and a four-game unbeaten streak have vaulted Vaughan Shooters to the top of the Eastern Conference following a convincing 5-1 victory over previously unbeaten Hamilton Thunder at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan, the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Sunday.

The surprising high score came as a collapse for Thunder which went into the game having conceded just a single goal in the first seven league games played this season.

But Shooters were full measure for the win after kicking off with a lot of determination and which brought a goal after just 10 minutes when Vaughan forward Darryl Gomez picked up the ball after being tripped in the penalty area to make it 1-0 from the penalty spot.

Desmond Humphrey made it 2-0 for Shooters just two minutes later and Jason De Thomasis made it 3-0 two minutes to the interval.

Nine minutes into the second half Stalin Cardenas made it 4-0 for Vaughan Shooters and six minutes later Hamilton scored to make it 4-1 on a penalty kick taken by Danijel Milojevic following a hand ball.

Jason De Thomasis struck his second of the night at 74 minutes for Shooters, a 5-1 final score.

Vaughan go on top of the Eastern Conference with a 4-2-3 WLT record for 15 points, one in front of Toronto Croatia with 14.

Hamilton Thunder suffer their first defeat and have a 4-1-3 record for 15 points and third position in the Western Conference. Oakville Blue Devils are now the only undefeated team in the CPSL.

One other game scheduled Sunday, the Brampton Stallions vs. North York Astros game was postponed due to poor ground conditions at Victoria Park in Brampton following heavy rain.

In one Women’s Canada Cup game, London City Selects defeated York Region Lady Shooters, 4-0.
