ASTROS SPARKLE WHILE HANDING BLUE DEVILS FIRST DEFEAT
Sunday - July 24, 2005

Toronto Croatia, Vaughan Shooters and Laval Dynamites all kept up the pace with decisive wins in the top half of the Eastern Conference standings in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Sunday, while North York Astros sparkled with an important win over previously unbeaten Oakville Blue Devils and Toronto Supra played to a scoreless tie with visiting London City.

Toronto Croatia led 2-0 at the interval on goals by Caswain Mason at 5 minutes and Hayden Fitzwilliams at 40 minutes in a hotly contested encounter with Brampton Stallions at Victoria Park in Brampton. Leo Laurito made it 3-0 for Toronto Croatia at the 50th minute mark, but the Stallions bounced back with goals by Kevin Peterkin (70 minutes) and Mladen Dikic (75 minutes) to make it 3-2 before Peter Curic made sure of the Toronto Croatia win at the 84th minute mark.

Vaughan Shooters and St. Catharines Wolves played an even, well-paced contest to a scoreless tie until Desmond Humphrey broke the deadlock at the 44th minute mark at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan. The Shooters took command in the second half, making it 2-0 on a goal by Jason De Thomasis at the 65th minute mark, 3-0 by Chris Turner five minutes later, 4-0 on a second goal by Desmond Humphrey before Sean Myers completed the scoring at 86 minutes for a 5-0 final score.

Laval Dynamites looked particularly strong defeating Hamilton Thunder, 4-0, at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium in Laval, with Nicolas Lesage scoring twice (30 and 90 minutes) after Arturo Salas opened the scoring at the 9 minute mark. Mohamed Ridouani scored the other Laval goal at 32 minutes. Hamilton failed to score from the penalty spot at the 51st minute.

Perhaps the most impressive result of a full slate of games in the CPSL on Sunday was the defeat by North York Astros of previously unbeaten Oakville Blue Devils at the Astros’ home ground of Esther Shiner Stadium. Astros scored a well-deserved 2-1 win on goals by Camilo Moreno (63 minutes) and Alex Braletic who scored the winning goal at 83 minutes after the Blue Devils opened the scoring at 31 minutes on a strike by Gabriel Pop. Oakville went into the game with six wins and a tie compared to North York’s two wins, six losses and a tie.

Toronto Supra and London City played to a scoreless tie at Brockton Stadium in Toronto’s west-end to continue a slowing pace by the London team following one of the best starts to the season in several years. London now have a 5-5-1 WLT record for 16 points in third position in the Western Conference standings, while Supra are sitting fourth in the east with a 3-2-3 record for 12 points.

In Women’s Canada Cup action, London Selects continued in their winning way by defeating Toronto Supra District Allstars 1-0 at Brockton Stadium. The London women have won all eight games played and are running away from five other teams with 24 points on top of the standings.
