VAUGHAN SHOOTERS IN THE HUNT
Thursday - August 18, 2005

IMPRESSIVE 3-0 WIN OVER BLUE DEVILS

Vaughan Shooters looked impressive in taking a 3-0 lead at half-time to win by that score over Western Conference leaders Oakville Blue Devils at Pine Glen in Oakville, one of two games played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Thursday. In one other game, St. Catharines Wolves and Hamilton Thunder fought to a scoreless tie at a relocated venue played at Club Roma, a game in which Hamilton played with ten men for the last 32 minutes.

A lively Vaughan Shooters took a quick lead after just five minutes when defender Angelo Pollastrone struck a well-placed effort from 30 yards and forward Jason De Thomasis made it 2-0 30 minutes later. Darryl Gomez put Shooters three-up four minutes to the interval after referee Amato De Luca pointed to the penalty spot following an infringement in the Oakville penalty area and Darryl Gomez made no mistake in finding the net.

St. Catharines goalkeeper Claudio Perri saved a penalty shot in the scoreless tie at Club Roma and St. Catharines also failed to capitalize on an opportunity after Hamilton's Ryan Thompson was shown a yellow card, then a red at 58 minutes after he was cautioned at the 19th minute mark.

It was Vaughan's second victory in less than a week following a 5-0 win over Border Stars last Sunday and the York Region team moved to within one point of Toronto Croatia at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Shooters have an 8-3-3 WLT record for 27 points.

Oakville Blue Devils remain at the top of the Western Conference with a 7-2-4 record, still 25 points but with a superior goal average over second place Hamilton Thunder, with 6-2-7 for 25 points. St. Catharines pick-up a point and now have a 5-6-2 record for 17 points, good for 4th place in the west.
