Lynx imports talent
By RON FANFAIR

With an emphasis on creativity and speed, new Toronto Lynx head coach Hubert Busby Jr. has recruited two Caribbean players for the 2005 United Soccer league's first division season that starts on Saturday.

T & T striker Conrad Smith arrived in camp two weeks ago while Jamaican mid-field player Winston Griffiths, who is on loan, is expected to join the team this weekend.

Busby said that the players fit into the scheme that he's attempting to create for his team this season.

"We want to make the game fun for both the players and the spectators," he said. "As a result, we want skilled players who possess speed and a bit of flair. I think that these two players have these attributes that we are looking for and I am excited that they are with us."

Smith played for the defunct Calgary Mustangs last season, scoring a team high six goals in 22 games. He was a member of the T & T national side that finished third behind Jamaica and Cuba in the Caribbean Digicel-sponsored series in Barbados two months ago.

Smith will team up with Ali Gerba, the league's third leading scorer last season with 15 goals and 34 points, for what should be a formidable frontline.

"After having a good rookie season in the A-league, I am looking for Conrad to solidify himself as a top striker," said Busby. "I believe we now have one of the best striking tandems in the league."

Smith began his international career in the four-nation tournament in Shanghai, China, scoring in his first game. He has since represented T & T 24 times, scoring nine goals. Prior to making his North American professional debut last season, Smith played for Caledonia AIA in the twin-island republic's pro league.

Griffiths plays for Arnett Gardens in the Wray & Nephew National Premier league.

"He has some speed and tremendous ball control," Busby said.

The Toronto Lynx plays its first four games on the road before returning home for its season opener against the defending A-league champions, Montreal Impact, on May 15.

"I am pretty happy with the way in which the team has taken shape," said Busby. "If we could hold our own on the road while the players gel, I think we will be in good shape by the time we return home."

The Lynx opens the season on Saturday night in Portland. The team plays in Vancouver on Sunday before traveling to Virginia for matches against the Richmond Kickers on April 30 and the Virginia Beach Mariners the following day.
