Lynx holding on to hope
By RON FANFAIR

The Toronto Lynx is still searching for its first win this season after succumbing 1-0 to defending A-league champions Montreal Impact in its home opener last Sunday afternoon at Centennial Stadium.

Jamaican Kevin Wilson scored the game's lone goal, heading in a rebound in the 50th minute. Wilson made amends for a missed opportunity in the 11th minute when Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar foiled his breakaway attempt with a brilliant save.

Though his team has displayed tremendous effort during the losing streak, Lynx head coach Herbert Busby is concerned about the lack of application and execution.

"We have to realize that we could play hard and still not win games because we are not doing the little things right that will help us win matches," he said. "We have to eliminate the silly mistakes that are costing us and capitalize on our opportunities. I don't think we are that good yet to get away with those things in this very competitive league.

Busby could also be concerned about the red cards that some of his top strikers have accumulated early in the season that have forced them to miss matches.

Striker Winston Griffiths, who was acquired on loan from Jamaican club Arnett Gardens, was unavailable for the home opener because of a one-game suspension. Trinidad & Tobago striker Conrad Smith missed the contest against Charleston Battery two weeks ago because of a red card he picked up in the game against the Virginia Mariners last month.

The Lynx is in last place in the United Soccer League's (USL) 12-team first division tournament with two points from seven matches. They have also given up a league-leading 13 goals while netting just five.

The Lynx will be back in action on May 28 against the Puerto Rico Islanders at Centennial Stadium. Kick-off is 7.30 p.m.

The Lady Lynx, on the other hand, kicked off their inaugural season in the W-league in grand style with an impressive 3-1 win over the Vermont Lady Voltage in the first game of Sunday's double header.

The Toronto side completely dominated the contest, outshooting their opponents 23-5.

The Lady Lynx will play their next match against the New York Magic on May 21 at Centennial Stadium starting at 7.30 p.m.
