Result of the Saturday August 12th, 2006 CSL game between Caribbean Selects and Italia Shooters played at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan at 8:00pm. Although the game was originally scheduled at the beginning of the season to be played at Birchmount Stadium in Etobicoke, the game was moved here because Birchmount is still not ready.

Attendance was about 50 people on this warm evening with a bright sun in the North West for the first half that would be in the eyes of the Shooters goalie. This game was moved with about two weeks notice but Selects would be considered the home team.

The Selects missed out by about 15 seconds from earning only their second league win of the year as they didn’t quite survive five minutes of added time by referee Jacques Tjonasan. They looked better than how I’ve seen them play in months. They had Ken Dawson as an assistant coach who was calling out commands to cover open players that in previous games had always been able to spring loose on rushes. He must be new because he had to keep asking who the players were.

The times I’ve watched the Shooters play, they need quite a few scoring chances before they capitalise. This time it was for the last seven minutes of the game when they poured on the pressure.

Selects goal scorer Dwayne Osbourne is nicknamed “Blinky” by his team-mates. He wore a padded eye patch over his left eye. This is not a temporary situation as he told me he was blinded back in 1999 at his job in Jamaica when a bottle exploded.

Steven Craig is no longer with the Selects and it turned out it was him I saw last night playing for Toronto Supra Portuguese after being transferred. Last year he played for Laval Dynamites. Often injured Joey Todaro is no longer with the Shooters I found out last week. He was their dead ball specialist but was let go when he failed to show up for their June 9th game against Toronto Croatia. The game was played for 7:00pm but he was away celebrating Italy’s World Cup victory.

Tonight’s game and last night’s Supra holding a lead on undefeated Serbian White Eagles until 64 minutes shows this year in the CSL that on any given night, any team can be competitive with the best.
