LONDON WINS WITH YOUNG AND OLD
Friday - August 25, 2006
Eagles slip

Serbian White Eagles stumbled in their 13th league game of the season against a spirited Italia Shooters squad and were held to a scoreless tie at Centennial Stadium in CSL action Friday night, while in another game London City, a team known for its strong youth development program, brought in some seniority to defeat North York Astros 3-1 at The Cove.

Italia fought every step of the way in a fast, entertaining encounter, looking for the break that might give the Vaughan-based team the first league win over a faultless White Eagles going into the game looking for a 13th victory in as many starts. But Eagles were determined to remain unbeaten, and that they did in a game that saw both teams with good chances to score a winner.

“We are disappointed not to win, but they played well and deserved the tie in what we thought was a hard, but clean game by both sides,” said Serbia executive Ken Stanojevich shortly after the final whistle.

London City is known showcasing young players and for moving young players to Europe over the years and on Friday night the young players were again in evidence including 17 year old Craig Boytchuk from Strathroy, Ontario, who played his part in bringing the 3-1 victory to the home side. Boytchuk is the grandson of former National Soccer League president Bill Boytchuk who was prominent in 1979 when another London player making a cameo appearance in Friday’s win, Louie Fortia, now 46, first wore the London City jersey.

London forward Michel Daoust scored twice at 18 and 76 minutes, while midfielder Bernard Al Chaar, scored the third. Astros’ forward Arun Tosing scored his side’s lone goal at the 52nd minute mark.

London improve to 3-8-6 record for 15 points to move in front of North York in the standings with their 3-7-5 record for 14 points.
