Result of the Sunday October 15, 2006 CSL game between Serbian White Eagles vs. Italia Shooters played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 5:00pm. This was the final in the CSL Championship Cup Playoffs.

Attendance was about 1800 (or whatever is capacity at this stadium when all the seats are full) on this cool sunny evening. Most of the fans were cheering for the White Eagles. The game didn’t start until 5:59pm which might be nice to think that it was to the fans' benefit that were on the outside waiting to get in through the tight security but was really because no one was allowed in until 5:00pm because some multi-facilitated kiddies’ soccer games were going on attended by about 300 parents. These fans had to be let out before the ‘searched’ CSL fans were allowed in. White Eagles owner Ken Stanojevic was understandably upset as he said Centennial Stadium was available and no one was using it today. (Of course who could have known a week ago that it wouldn’t rain for five days in a row and turn the stadium into a mud pit like Victoria Park in Brampton during the quarterfinals). At least this game was on field turf so the weather wouldn’t matter although old-timers don’t like the football lines.

This was the fourth year in a row for the Shooters in the Championship game but the first time they’ve won. This is the first year in the league for Serbian White Eagles who had the best record during the regular season.

Referee Mercey Watfa kept the game under control. The crowd didn’t like any calls against the White Eagles but they saved more of their booing and swearing for Ennio the PA announcer anytime he was forced to read a list of sponsors or a reminder that the City didn’t allow smoking in the stands.

Shooters goalie Carmilo Benzi earned the shutout for his team for the second week in a row. He was both sharp and lucky to win.

Non scoring highlights included at 2 minutes when SWE Sasa Viciknez bend a 30 yard freekick from the right that was caught by the goalie. At 10 minutes IS Sean Myers on left sideline crossed a through ball to IS Luke Stedmond who blasted a 15 yard shot high and wide right. Viciknez had another freekick at 20 minutes from 23 yards but he blasted it into a defender in the player wall. At 30 minutes SWE Nikola Budalic blasted a shot from 20 yarder that had the flying goalie block. One minute later IS Stedmond blasted a shot from 25 yards that had the goalie deflect over the net. Two minutes after that, IS Bill Androutsos had a 45 yard cross from the left that bounced through the SWE box just steps ahead of an IS player. At 42 minutes SWE Gabriel Pop’s 30 yard shot up the middle is saved by the diving goalie. Right after that SWE Joshua Gordon crossed from right 15 yards that had the goalie catch this low knuckler. At 45 minutes, IS Fitzroy Christey dekes a defender and pushes ball to IS Jason DeThomasis who can’t draw a penalty kick on a dive in the box. The next minute DeThomasis does take a 25 yard low blast that’s stopped by the goalie. At two minutes of injury time, IS Desi Humphrey’s 45 yard freekick from the left had IS Androutsos on right pop up header from 12 yards and a charging IS player run into the net on left post but the ball was deflected for a cornerkick. The cornerkick sent in from the left was blasted by IS Frank Bruno from 22 yards from the right well over the net.

In the second half with it now dark, at 49 minutes, SWE Dragan Radovic had a 12 yard blast that the goalie had to palm ball wide left. The cornerkick had Sasa Viciknez from the left send in the ball that was headed away by a defender but one touch later Viciknez had the ball back and crossed in a 20 yarder from the left over the net. At 51 minutes the IS goalie dived to left post to cover a loose ball that IS Fitzroy Christey had go off the back of his heel when he missed a clearance kick. At 55 minutes, SWE Alex Braletic passed the ball from the left at 15 yards and SWE Radovic charged into box and blasted 6 yard shot wide right. After the goal at 63 minutes, IS Anthony Adur took a 15 yard shot from the left that’s low and caught by the goalie. At 66 minutes SWE Mirko Medic dived in the IS box but his header was blocked. At 74 minutes IS Josue Jaramillo was injured crossing the ball from the left end line through the SWE box but no one was there to make play. At 79 minutes, SWE Milan Janosevic’s 30 yard cross from the left had a diving goalie punch ball forward out of box. At 80 minutes, SWE Bozo Milic one touches ball when he received a cross from the right and hits the right post from 6 yards. At 85 minutes SWE Viciknez cornerkick from the left had charging SWE Mirko Medic head ball over the net from 10 yards.

A minute after that IS Sean Myers’ 30 yard shot from the right is just wide right with the goalie caught out. At 88 minutes, SWE Braletic’s 30 yard cross from the left had the charging goalie catch ball in front of a crowd of players in his box. At 91 minutes an IS defender leaped just inside his box and deflect away a cross from the left but it hits his hand (broadcaster Dick Howard saw it) but no penalty kick was given. In further injury time SWE Viciknez’s 28 yard freekick from the left was blasted off a head in the player wall and one minute later Viciknez’s cornerkick from the left had a defender block.

CSL president Cary Kaplan presented the trophy to the Shooters and the players posed on the field away from the booing White Eagles fans still leaving the stands. There was some coverage of this game for local papers and local cable television. Rogers will have highlights on their newscast Monday evening the cameraman said.

Italy won this summer’s World Cup but also Ottawa St Anthony’s Italia win the Open Canada Cup and Italia Shooters win the CSL Championship Cup. .
