Oakville jumps clear

Last year’s league champions Oakville Blue Devils jumped into a four-point lead at the top of the CSL National Division standings with a cliffhanger 2-1 victory over London City at The Cove in London Friday night.

Both teams went full tilt for 90 plus minutes in a game that saw London goalkeeper Ibrahim Hadzic taken off following a collision with Oakville’s Petro Czoli almost immediately after halftime. With substitute goalkeeper Erik Elmauer in place, the Blue Devils opened the scoring after 50 minutes when midfielder Sam Hassam found the net. Defender Denny Velastegui made it 2-0 for the visitors at 70 minutes, but London pressure to get back into the game paid dividends when forward Michel Daoust struck for London City at the 88th minute mark.

There were opportunities for London to tie the game but a determined Blue Devils team held on for the win and an important three points.

The victory means a clear 4-point margin at the top for Oakville, a 3-2-0 WLT record for nine points at this early stage of the CSL campaign. London has a 1-2-2 record for five points.
