SQUEAKER AT CLUB ROMA

Blue Devils on top

Oakville Blue Devils asserted themselves at the top of the National Division but only by a 1-0 squeaker in defeating St. Catharines Wolves at Club Roma in St. Catharines, the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

Following a scoreless first half, Oakville's Sam Hassam scored a picture goal when he sent a rising shot from 30 yards out of reach of Wolves’ goalkeeper Kyle Mendonca at the 68th minute mark. Both team had missed opportunities to score prior to that time and there were more chances following, but the lone marker held up to the final whistle. Chris Baker was solid throughout in the Blue’ Devils goal.

Oakville played with 10 men for the last 15 minutes following the ejection of their defender Myles O’Connor following an altercation with St. Catharines midfielder Danijil Milojevic 33 minutes into the second half.

The victory moves Oakville six points ahead of second place Windsor Border Stars, while St. Catharines remain in fifth place with a 1-3-3 WLT record for six points.
