Canada Cup '07 invitation

The increasingly popular Open Canada Cup, a competition under the auspices of the Canadian Soccer League and open to all senior men's teams in Canada, amateur or professional, will kickoff the Preliminary Round on the Victoria Day weekend, May 19 – 21.

Teams are now invited to make application for entry, the deadline for which is Monday, April 30.

Following the Preliminary Round, there will be two additional rounds leading to the semifinals played during the September Labour Day weekend with the final game on Monday, September 3.

The Open Canada Cup, first played in 2003 in conjunction with the Government of Canada sponsorship, carries a cash prize of $10,000 and a trophy for the winner. Last year Ottawa St. Anthony Italia became the first amateur team to win. The Ottawa Carleton League team defeated the Toronto Lynx, 2-0, in the final on September 24 while the Lynx were in their final year of playing in the USL's Division One. It turned out to be a big year for the Ottawa Italia team which went on to win the Ontario, then Canadian senior amateur championships.

Earlier winners of the Open Canada Cup are London City in 2003 and Windsor Border Stars in 2004 and 2005.

The CSL's regular season games will kickoff with ten teams on Friday, May 11, five in the National Division and five in the International Division and the complete schedule will be released on Friday, March 30.
