SEASON OPENER AT CENTENNIAL STADIUM

Late Portuguese victory

Portuguese Supra scored two late goals to score a 5-3 victory over Windsor Border Stars in the CSL season opener at Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west-end Friday night.

It was a ding-dong struggle with the lead going back and forth with the result in doubt until the late stages of the well-played encounter.

Defender, sometimes midfielder Carlos Zaballos struck the 2007 opening goal for Portuguese after 11 minutes and Windsor’s Scott Patraquin tied the score 1-1 four minutes later.

Border Stars’ forward Dominic Scicluna put the visitors ahead, 2-1, at the 18th minute mark and Yami William tied for Portuguese seven minutes later.

Nicolas Keith put the Toronto team ahead at the 49th minute mark, forward Aaron Byrd tied it 3-3 for Windsor at 69 minutes, Jesse Marcia made it 4-3 for Portuguese at 74 minutes and John Marcia sealed the win for the home side in added time.

Portuguese Supra finished 4th of 5 in the International Conference last season, while Windsor ended fourth in the National Conference.
