Attendance was 166 on this damp evening for the Shooters home opener. The field had drained quite well after the afternoon shower.
This was a very rough game with lots of injuries and five minutes of extra time added in the second half. Gladston “Scratchy” Richards had to be subbed at 50 minutes when he couldn’t get up after being injured two minutes earlier. Fitzroy Christie was injured at 12 minutes and returned five minutes later and again at 54 minutes when Supra Ronald Nicholas was injured at the same time 15 yards away. Shooters sub Josue Jaramillo was injured at 70 minutes and had to be replaced.
Supra had many chances to tie the game in the second half but the Shooters defense kept many chances to outside the box. Camilo Benzi earned the shutout without any really difficult stops.
This was the identical score to Friday when these two teams met at Centennial Stadium and the Shooters won that game too. Sure, the teams couldn’t complain that either team was more tired than the other nor longer rested however tempers wouldn’t have cooled off from Friday’s game.
The Shooters gave out a paper at the beginning of the game that they would be playing the Uruguay U20 National Team on Saturday June 23, 2007 at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 3:30pm. (I hope they reschedule the Shooters vs Serbian White Eagles game the night before so they can make a game of it).
Also confirmed today is that North York Astros will be playing the Mexican U20 National Team on Wednesday June 27, 2007 at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 7:30pm.
Both these games will be formally announced at a press conference within ten days. Both games needed special permission from FIFA who won’t permit teams to play within 15 days of tournament games. These games will be only three or four days before their tourney openers so expect a full first team lineup. This brought up the question of who the Canada U20s would play before their opening game. One Supra official said they played the PDL Toronto Lynx at the Nottawasaga Inn outside Alliston Ontario and beat the Lynx 3-0. I’ll try to get some details about this game from team officials at the Lady Lynx game this Wednesday.
