CANADIAN LIONS WIN FIRST IN 8-1 ROMP
Sunday - July 22, 2007
Lions finally roar

Canadian Lions exploded to an 8-1 victory for their first win of the season at Birchmount Stadium, while St. Catharines Wolves fought to a scoreless tie at home to Trois-Rivieres Attak, two games in the CSL Sunday.

Lions have come close to winning several of their recent games, losing by the odd goal and at times in the dying minutes, so that the first win did not come as a complete surprise to those following the team’s progress closely. But the manner in which the Lions romped to a 4-1 lead at half-time and an 8-1 final did surprise many observers as a usually gritty London City side were overwhelmed by the International Division team for the entire 90 minutes.

Forward Evan Milward of Canadian Lions scored twice, at 25 and 68 minutes, his 8th and 9th of the season, while singles went to Nordo Gooden, the opening goal at 9 minutes, midfielder Joe Rini struck at 26 minutes, Marko Jankovic at 43 minutes, Lexton Hurlock at 89 minutes and Jalani Smith just before the final whistle. There was an own goal off a London City player at 75 minutes and the lone London marker was scored by Miguel Knox at the 33rd minute mark.

Canadian Lions still occupy the cellar position in the International Division with a 1-6-5 WLT record for 8 points, while London City are in a similar position in the National Division with a 2-7-2 record for 8 points.

St. Catharines Wolves went into their game at Club Roma expecting to close the gap with National Division leaders Trois-Rivieres Attak, but the home side and the visitors both failed to find the net despite some excellent midfield play on both sides.

Attak’s Nicolas Lesage was prominent several times attempting to break through, and Danny Gallagher created several openings for St. Catharines Wolves, but the game ended scoreless.

Trois-Rivieres are at the top of their division with a 5-3-5 record for 20 points, while St. Catharines are now at 3-3-4 for 13 points.
