CROATIA PRESERVES UNBEATEN STREAK WITH SCORELESS TIE
Sunday - September 9, 2007
Serbian Eagles on top

Serbian White Eagles took over the top position in the International Division with a 5-1 victory over North York Astros, while Italia Shooters and Toronto Croatia fought to a scoreless tie, both games of high interest played in the CSL Sunday night.

Serbia striker Sasa Viciknez led his team with two second half goals at 49 and 69 minutes at Esther Shiner Stadium, his 9th and 10th of the season following a 2-0 Serbian White Eagles lead at halftime. The first half goals were scored by Nikola Budalic (10 minutes) and Alex Braletic, his 8th of the season at 35 minutes.

Newcomer Zoran Kokot scored the fifth Serbia goal at 90 minutes and the lone Astros’ strike came from forward Alessandro Bancheri at the 56th minute mark.

Serbian White Eagles improve to an 11-4-1 (WLT) record for 34 points and top position, one ahead of Italia Shooters 9-3-6 for 33 points and Toronto Croatia 8-0-8 for 32 points.

Croatia kept their unbeaten record intact with the 0-0 tie at The Soccer Centre, a game that was also important to the International Division title. Carmelo Benzi in goal for Italia Shooters and George Azcurra for Croatia, were both solid in preserving the tie.

Serbian White Eagles, St. Catharines Wolves, Italia Shooters and Toronto Croatia have all secured playoff berths following weekend games, which leaves four spots to still be decided by the end of regular season play on October 7.
