Attendance was about 75 and many of them were pro-Croatian on this warm evening.
When I first got here I almost regretted choosing this from the other two in the Toronto area all starting at the same time because I only saw eleven Supra players warming up. I thought the team had given up on getting one of the last playoff spots. There are still three spots up for grabs and five teams trying to grab one. Eventually they had three subs but the coach didn’t bring any of them into the game. Croatia had a full bench including two extra goalies in their substitute limit of seven. They had the luxury of not bringing in usual starters Robert Fran and Domagoj Sain until the second half.
The Supra players didn’t tire out as the game wore on. Supra had lost 2-0 to Croatia on Friday night. No worries about Croatia making post season play because they are one of the five best teams that have clinched a spot. Croatia remains unbeaten this season but have so many ties they might not finish first and maintain a home field advantage.
Arbelo had the best freekick chance up until the winning kick as at 83 minutes he had a 22 yard freekick from the right that forced Azcurra to dive to palm the ball wide right of the post. I counted Supra getting six scoring chances to three for Croatia after that first goal to press for the equalizer. They didn’t give up.
Referee Amato DeLuca kept the rough play in check. He could have easily have given second Yellow cards to Croatia’s Hayden Fitzwilliams and Supra’s Giovanni Annisi in the second half for separate incidents but just let them off with a warning. Supra’s Helio Perreira went down a little too easy twice in the box and DeLuca wasn’t giving out Penalty kicks that easily. The warm up had players practicing with about fifty Canada geese in the endzone but they broke into flocks and left before the game started. Nothing like the squirrel running around at BMO Field yesterday afternoon at the Toronto FC game. DeLuca was working the line at that game. Joe Fletcher worked the other line in that game despite the MLS official report listing some guy named Simon Fearn.
