Italia, Astros, Brampton Lions triumph Sunday, Attak and St. Catharines tie Saturday. 2008-05-31

Italia Shooters scored an impressive 4-0 shutout victory over London City in the Canadian Soccer League Sunday afternoon to record their second win over the weekend, the result follows a 2-0 win over TFC Academy at Lamport Stadium on Friday night. In other Sunday games, Brampton Lions won their season home opener 1-0 against TFC Academy, a well-attended and well played game at Victoria Park in this community just northwest of Toronto, and North York Astros picked up their first win of the season, a 3-0 result at Esther Shiner Stadium, all goals coming in the second half against the visiting Windsor Border Stars.

Matthew Palleschi scored his second goal over the weekend to open the scoring for Italia at 42 minutes against London on Sunday, Jason De Thomasis made it 2-0 just before the half-time whistle, Frank Jonke made it 3-0 at 66 minutes and Stalin Cardenas made it 4-0 at the 79th minute mark to round out the scoring.

Daniel Nascimento scored the winner at 44 minutes for Brampton over TFC Academy, his second strike of the weekend following a goal in the Lions’ 2-1 loss to Toronto Croatia on Friday night.

Jonathan Hurtis opened the scoring for North York at the 67th minute mark against Windsor Border Stars, Sergio Ribadeneira made it 2-0 four minutes later and Alessandro Bancheri completed the Astros’ scoring at 87 minutes.

In Friday’s game for Windsor, Byrd struck at 24, 45 (penalty) and 74 minutes and Emilio Gorgio scored the fourth for the Border team at 70 minutes, while Andrew Logie (29 minutes) and Mike Vandenheuval (86 minutes)scored for London.

Portugal FC took an early lead on a goal at 6 minutes by captain Danny Amaral in their 2-1 victory Friday when Amaral took advantage of a miscue in the Serbian defence, but White Eagles striker Sasa Viciknez scored a picture goal to tie the score 1-1 at 20 minutes. Viciknez collected the ball inside the 18 yard line to chip over an advancing Mike Silva in the Portugal goal.The winning goal for the Portuguese side cam from Mike Aigbokie who scored at the 70th minute mark for a 2-1 final.

Toronto Croatia were full marks for their 2-1 victory over Brampton Lions in their season opener at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga Friday, with Hayden Fitzwilliams scoring for the home side at 9 minutes and Mario Kulis making it 2-0 at the 59th minute mark. Daniel Nascimento reduced the lead for Brampton at 79 minutes while the visitors were playing with 10 men following the late first half ejection of Miles O’Connor.

The Italia Shooters 2-0 win over TFC Academy follows a 1-0 victory over Trois-Rivieres Attak on May 25. Murphy Wiredu opened the scoring at 33 minutes and midfielder Matthew Palleschi increased the lead for the Shooters at 53 minutes. Palleschi missed a penalty kick 17 minutes later and midfielder Luca Zucal of Italia Shooters was shown a red card for dissent at 91 minutes
