Trois-Rivieres Attak split weekend with 2-1 loss to TFC Academy

TFC Academy opened its season with a narrow 2-1 victory over Trois-Rivieres Attak at Esther Shiner Stadium on Saturday afternoon and this result followed a 3-0 win by the Quebec team over Italia Shooters at Maple, just north of Toronto Friday night.

Trois-Rivieres took a 1-0 lead at the 3rd minute mark in Saturday’s encounter, a goal by Romanian-born forward Mircea Ilcu, but TFC Academy midfielder James Stamopoulos equalized just three minutes later. With the game heading for a 1-1 tie, TFC midfielder Ryan McLeod struck the winner at 81 minutes and the Academy team held on for the 2-1 win.

Trois-Rivieres Attak forward Guillaume Heroux was ejected just before the final whistle.

Trois-Rivieres Attak, winner of the National Division title and the CSL Championship finalist in 2008, looked convincing in their 3-0 defeat of Italia Shooters in the CSL season opener. Attak forward Yannik Rome-Gosselin led the visitors with two goals at 42 minutes and 70 minutes and Reda Aggourram beat Italia ‘keeper Roberto Scala for the third goal at the 87th minute mark.

The Attak were very much on top as the game progressed despite playing with 10 men following the ejection of forward Chris-Michel Rumuri who was shown two yellow cards in the space of four minutes in the first half by referee David Barrie.

Saturday’s game was televised by Rogers TV for showing on Cable 10 in Toronto Sunday at 5 pm.

Games resume on Friday, May 22 when Portugal FC host CSL defending champions Serbian White Eagles, an 8 pm kickoff Lamport Stadium in Toronto’s west-end and there is one game the following day when TFC Academy and Toronto Croatia clash at Lamport, a 7 pm kickoff.The CSL regular season runs to late September and is followed by the playoffs through to the CSL Championship late October.
