2009-06-22

Two goals by Toronto Croatia midfielder Mario Pupic(above)gave his side a 2-1 victory over Italia Shooters at Centennial Stadium Sunday night, while in an afternoon game played at Victoria Park, Brampton Lions’ forward David Guzman also scored twice for a 3-1 Lions win over Trois-Rivieres Attak.

Guzman opened the scoring at 17 minutes for a 1-0 half-time lead for the home side and the 2008 leading goalscorer in the CSL, Brampton’s Daniel Nascimento, added a second at the 60th minute mark.

Guzman struck again at 80 minutes for a commanding 3-0 lead for Brampton Lions and Trois-Rivieres forward Reda Aggourram found the net for the visitors four minutes later, a 3-1 score which remained to the final whistle.

Aggourram’s goal was his third of the weekend after scoring both Attak goals in the Quebec team’s 2-0 victory over London City on Friday night.

Italia Shooters opened the scoring in the late game at Centennial Stadium, a goal by forward Kadian Lecky at 33 minutes for 1-0 lead at the interval.

Croatia’s Hugo Herrera was shown the red card at 57 minutes for violent conduct, but the 10-man home side equalized on a penalty kick at the 65th minute mark. The penalty was awarded when Hayden Fitzwilliams of Toronto Croatia was tripped in the penalty box and Mario Pupic made no mistake in finding the net.

Pupic scored his second and the winner when he tapped in a cross from the right win to beat Italia’s goalkeeper Camilo Benzi just two yards out. The goal came at the 81st minute mark for a 2-1 final score.

Toronto Croatia maintain an unbeaten record of 4-0-1 WLT for 13 points, five points ahead of second place Portugal FC in the International Division, while Italia Shooters have a 2-3-0 record for six points.

Brampton Lions picked up their first win in the new season and have a 1-2-1 record for four points, while Trois-Rivieres Attak have a 3-2-0 for nine points, good for second place in the National Division.
