2009-07-19

North York Astros were full value for a surprising 3-2 defeat of National Division leaders Trois-Rivieres Attak in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Saturday night.

The Astros, searching for their first win of the season while noticeably picking up strength with each passing game, played with determination and at times with good poise as they finally broke through for a 3-1 lead midway through the second half and hold off a late bid by the Attak. It was a 3-2 Astros victory at the whistle.

The game, relocated from Esther Shiner Stadium to Downsview Park with a later than expected 8 p.m. kickoff due to a delayed trip from Quebec by the Trois-Rivieres team, was televised live in Toronto by Rogers.

The Astros pressed early, but it was Trois-Rivieres that struck first with a goal at 11 minutes by forward Mircea Ilcu. He beat Astros’ keeper Arthur Zaslavski with a drive from 15 yards that found the left corner of the net.

North York tied the game at the 30-minute mark when Adrian Pena, playing his first game for the home side, beat Attak goalkeeper David Lewis-Lamoureux while cutting in from the left wing.

Nick Miodrag put the Astros up 2-1, scoring off a corner kick at 51 minutes, and 10 minutes later substitute Diego Maradona stepped on to the pitch to score his side’s third goal with a good-looking raking drive that found the left corner well out of reach of Lewis-Lamoureux.

The Quebec visitors came back and Yannick Rome-Gosselin scored from a difficult angle to make it 3-2 at 87 minutes. The reserve team for the USL’s Montreal Impact pressed again this time looking for an equalizer, but the Astros held well for the 3-2 final score.

North York Astros are in 5th position in the National Division with a 1-6-1 WLT record for 4 points, while Trois-Rivieres are still on top of this division with a 6-3-0 record for 18 points and they play again on Sunday, a clash with Serbian White Eagles at Downsview Park a 3 p.m. kickoff.
