ARGHITTU SECOND HALF STRIKE SAVES ST. CATHARINES FROM DEFEAT.......TFC 'keeper Varlokostas outstanding in 1-1 tie
2009-08-05

St. Catharines Wolves had a distinct second half edge in a well-played, well attended encounter with TFC Academy, but the hard working younger visiting team earned a 1-1 tie in the only game played in the CSL Wednesday night.

TFC Academy took the lead at the 27th minute mark when midfielder James Stamopoulos struck a rising shot from 20 yards to catch the top corner out of reach of Wolves’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri and the goal held up for a 1-0 score at the interval.

St. Catharines were awarded a penalty by referee Yusri Rudolf at 76 minutes for a hand ball offence, but a weak shot by defender Scott MacLennan was saved by TFC goalkeeper Soitiri Varlokostas. The home side tied the game three minutes later, however, when forward Carlo Arghutti took a pass from midfielder Stefan Kamendy to easily beat Varlokostas from 10 yards.

St. Catharines pressed hard for the winner, but several key saves by Varlokostas kept the score at 1-1 to the final whistle.

Two players were ejected during the game when referee Rudolf pulled out the red card to send off TFC’s Daniel Di Biagio just before half time in what appeared to be Serious Foul Play and at the 79th minute mark Wolves’ Scott McLennan received a second yellow card.

St. Catharines now have a 3-2-5 WLT record for 14 points for second place in the National Division and TFC Academy are tied for points in third place with a 3-4-5 record.
