WEEKEND GAMES IN THE CSL .............former Serbian White Eagles star Mike Stojanovic to be honoured Friday night
2009-08-06

A tribute to a former Serbian White Eagles player is a highlight of this weekend’s games in the Canadian Soccer League.

Mike Stojanovic, a former Canadian national team player who was a star in the North American Soccer League in the 1970s and 80s with Rochester Lancers, San Diego Sockers and Golden Bay Earthquakes (now San Jose Earthquakes of MLS), will be honoured at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke on Friday, August 7 prior to the CSL game between Serbian White Eagles and Portugal FC.

Stojanovic was NASL Player of the Year, a member of the All-TIME Canadian NASL team and was this year inducted into Canada’s Soccer Hall of Fame.

Mike Stojanovic was a goalscorer, so much so that in the 1974 season while playing for Serbian White Eagles he found the net 52 times, a record in Canadian professional soccer. He scored a total of 96 goals in just two seasons with Serbian White Eagles of the National Soccer League, a forerunner league of today’s CSL.

He was born Momcilo Stojanovic in Serbia when it was the former Yugoslavia and in his career there he played for Radnicki Kragujevac and FK Vardar which at that time were both part of the Yugoslav First Division.

The Serbian White Eagles vs. Portugal FC game will kickoff at 8 p.m. on Friday night, to be preceded by a ceremony honouring Mike Stojanovic.
