ASTROS TAKE EARLY 2-0 LEAD, BUT COLLAPSE FOR 5-3 HOME DEFEAT TO BRAMPTON LIONS.....Trois-Rivieres Attak take 10-point lead in National Division following 1-0 victory over TFC Academy
2009-08-08

Trois-Rivieres Attak picked-up an important 1-0 home victory over TFC Academy to take a 10-point lead in the National Division, while a few hours earlier North York Astros took a 2-0 lead at home to Brampton Lions, but collapsed in the second half to go down 5-3, two games in the CSL Saturday.

North York took a 2-0 lead early in the game with Brampton Lions at Esther Shiner Stadium when forwards Gensi Xhuti scored at 11 minutes and Jarek Whiteman four minutes later.

Forward David Guzman scored the first of two goals for Brampton at the 39th minute mark for a 2-1 score in favour of the Astros at half-time.

Brampton forward Alex Arbello scored from a free kick into the top corner of the net at 55 minutes to tie the score at 2-2 and just one minute later Guzman scored his second for the Lions and eighth for the season to put the visitors ahead 3-2.

Midfielder Agustin de Medina struck for Brampton at 60 minutes for a 4-2 lead, but the Astros fought back to score a third goal, reducing the Brampton lead to 4-3 when Nick Miodrag beat Lions’ goalkeeper Kevin Doyle at the 79th minute mark.

The game was still in doubt at the 90 minute mark and it was three minutes into added time when Brampton’s Jeremy Shepherd put the ball past Astros’ goalkeeper Euloge Awitor for a 5-3 Brampton Lions victory.

Brampton Lions improve to a 4-5-2 WLT record for 14 points and in a three-way tie for second place in the National Division, while North York Astros are in 5th place with a 2-8-1 record for 7 points.

Forward Reda Agourram scored the only goal of the match to give Trois-Rivieres Attak a hard-earned 1-0 home win over TFC Academy in the second game played Saturday. Agourram found the net at 48 minutes in a game that could have gone either way.

The prolific Attak forward scored his 12th of the season and has a 4-goal lead in the CSL goalscoring race.

The Attak played with 10 men for the last 13 minutes following the ejection of forward Antoine Flores at the 79th minute mark.

Trois-Rivieres now have a 8-4-0 record for 24 points and are 10 points clear of three clubs tied for second place in the National Division, including TFC Academy with their 3-5-5 record following Saturday’s game.

There is one remaining game this weekend when St. Catharines Wolves travel to Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke to meet high-flying Toronto Croatia, the only team still unbeaten in the current campaign. It’s an 8.15 pm kickoff.
